Bush pushes flexible environmental spending

JUNE 22, 2001

President Bush made a speech at the Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama on Thursday to push his $900 million investment in the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Bush and Secretary of Interior Gale Norton say the fund will enable states and tribes to be flexible and come up with creative environmental programs. Bush said: "you could use the money to buy parkland, you can use it to protect endangered species."

Although lawmakers are welcoming the historic investment, Democrats say the administration cannot use the LWCF to replace slashed budget cuts in environmental programs. They say Bush's proposed uses ignore Congressional intent of the fund.
