EPA to propose park air rules

JUNE 22, 2001

The Environmental Protection Agency will propose rules today to require aging power plants and industrial facilities located near national parks to reduce their emissions, reports the New York Times.

The rules affect plants built between 1962 and 1977. They were proposed by the Clinton administration but never implemented.

The EPA says the aging facilities emit more than 250 tons of pollution, decreasing visibility at parks throughout the country. The EPA is required by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 to improve the air quality at 156 national parks and wilderness areas.
