Tribes seek wildlife funds

JUNE 27, 2000

Tribal leaders from Idaho, South Dakota, Arizona and Nebraska asked Senator Frank Murkowski (R Alaska), chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, for a bigger share of the money that would be appropriated by the Conservation and Restoration Act.

Murkowski is a key supporter of the Act that would take $2.8 billion every year from offshore oil and gas drilling fees and royalties to purchase parks and open space, protect wildlife, fund recreation and historic preservation, and preserve environmentally sensitive coastal lands.

The tribes are seeking to add language in the Act that would let federally recognized tribes receive wildlife protection money which the federal government already gives states.

The bill passed the House on May 11. The Committee will hold debate the bill during its business meeting on Wednesday.
