JUNE 28, 2001

Having succeeded at placing limits on development of some federal lands, the House today will try to ban drilling in another area: the Great Lakes.

An amendment proposed by Rep. David Bonior (D-Mich.) would prevent the US Army Corps of Engineers from using money to issue new permits from drilling in the five Great Lakes and rivers. Supporters are confident of approval.

The House last week approved an Interior spending bill to ban development in national monuments and to delay drilling in an area off the Gulf of Mexico near Florida.
