Cherokee Tribe weighs development

JUNE 4, 2001 The Eastern Band of Cherokee five years ago paid more than $3 million for a 309 acres of land taken from them in 1823. With the purchase has come questions of how the tribe will use or develop it. The land includes an historic and sacred Cherokee village which some don't want it bothered while others have suggested a golf resort of a cultural center. The issue may be put before the 12,500 members on a referendum this fall. Get the Story:
