Endangered species limits rejected

JUNE 8, 2001

The House Interior Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday rejected a part of President Bush's proposed budget that gives Secretary of Interior Gale Norton more power over endangered species.

The provision would limit the ability of citizens to sue the government for protection of species. Currently, there is a moratorium within US Fish and Wildlife on listing species under the Endangered Species Act due to a large amount of litigation.

The provision would only last a year.
