Bison are cheaper, easier to maintain, and economically promising, said a former cattle rancher who has become a convert.

Marlowe Goble, an Idaho rancher, had permits for cattle grazig on 250,000 acres of federal land. But now he raises 1,200 bison and says there are positive benefits.

Cattle ranchers have become the targets of environmentalists and Indian organizations who say they are over-running the native homeland of bison.
