Pueblo land funds partially restored

FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2001 The Senate on Thursday approved a bill which restores $9 million in funds to cleanup and return contaminated land to San Ildefonso Pueblo and a New Mexico county. The funds had been cut by the Bush administration in the proposed Department of Energy budget. The land was taken by the federal government for use by Los Alamos National Laboratory, the birthplace of the atomic bomb. The funding approved still falls short of the $60 million required to finish the transfers to the Pueblo and Santa Fe County. About 2,000 acres is being returned to each. The Pueblo land has already been cleaned up, said a DOE official. More work has to be done for the county land. Get the Story:
