Locusts a 'gift' to Onondaga Nation
JULY 2, 2001

To members of the Onondaga Nation of New York, the locust is regarded as a gift fromt the Creator and is still enjoyed by many as a yummy snack.

Every 17 years, the periodical cicada returns to Onondaga territory. So this summer, they are being served up stir-fried, pan-fried, or just plain raw.

The locusts, unlike other types, do little damage to crops and do not spread disease. But zoologists say their upstate habitat is slowly disappearing.
