Nez Perce Tribe backs breaching bill

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho is supporting a bill that would remove four federally operated dams on the lower Snake River if efforts to improve dwindling runs of salmon do not succeed.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) last week, calls on the General Accounting Office to study breaching the dams and possible extinction of the salmon. If necessary, the dams would be removed in order to protect treaty rights, save the salmon or meet clean water standards.

Along with three other Columbia River basin tribes, the Nez Perce Tribe on Monday participated in a meeting with officials from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. They discussed how to improve water quality in the basin.

Four tribes have treaty rights in the basin.
