Native village running dry

The small village of Akhiok on Kodiak Island is running low on water, a problem being documented by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

Lack of rainfall and a small drainage basin have contributed to the problem, says an engineer with the consortium. About 100,000 gallons of water a day are needed by the 100 summer residents but the local reservoir -- which is of poor quality -- only has 5,000 to 6,000 gallons.
