AUGUST 10, 2000

The Lummi Nation of Washington is part of a effort including Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen and actress Uma Thurman to save an old-growth forest in the state.

The area is used by the tribal youth who are sent there for ceremonial reasons. The tribe and various other groups are banding together to try to buy the land for $7.1 million and so far have raised $5.4 million.

But they are $75,000 short of money needed for a September 30 deadline. Crown Pacific, a logging company, instituted the deadline, which was extended after a benefit concert organized by Thurman failed to raise the money needed.

Once purchased the land will be turned over to the Lummi through a legal process known as a conservation easement.
