AUGUST 11, 2000 Fires in Montana have knocked out power lines in the state and the Flathead Reservation. No immediate power shortages are expected as a result of the fire. The lines are part of the Bonneville Power Administration and deliver electricity to the Pacific Northwest. Fires in the Clear Creek Divide have burned 32,000 acres on or near the Flathead reservation. Not enough crews are available to fight some eight fires there. Statewide, the 20 largest active fires have burned 300,000 acres. Although some parts of the state have been closed, the state has said news reports have over-exaggerated the problems. National forests and BLM land have been closed by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management in Western Montana. Major national parks like Glacier and Yellowstone are still open and the state's web site is reminding tourists that there is a lot of Montana to visit. Get the Story:
