Feds can't find dynamite

AUGUST 2, 2000

Federal officials can't find the 140 cases of dynamite on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota they came to detonate on Monday.

All 523 residents of Agency Village were evacuated during the past weekend in preparation for the Bureau of Indian Affairs to detonate the dyanmite. But the BIA never found two separate deposits of dynamite on Monday or Tuesday and have asked tribal elder Nathan Thompson to help them find the dynamite.

In addition to being the last surviving member of the original BIA crew who buried the dyanmite in 1938, Thompson is relying on spiritual voices to help diggers locate the explosives.

Members of the tribe, particularly elders, who have been away from their homes aren't happy the blast hasn't gone off as planned.
