FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

About a hundred Sioux tribal members and their supporters walked out of a public hearing in South Dakota on Thursday to protest a proposed land transfer they say violates the Treaty of Fort Laramie and endangers burial grounds.

The federal government is proposing to transfer more than 90,000 acres of land to the state along the Missouri River. But tribes in the area vehemently oppose the transfer.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) is leading a bill in Congress to give the state control.
