Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) on Tuesday criticized Gov. Tony Knowles (D) for deciding not to appeal the landmark Katie John case to the Supreme Court.

In a press release, Murkowski said subsistence and control over state waters are still left unresolved. He said Knowles has thrown away the chance to restore state control to about 60 percent of navigable waters.

Sport hunting and fishing groups have also criticized Knowles. Alaska Natives have praised him.

Knowles now plans on putting together a group of people to work with state lawmakers to come up with an amendment to the state's constitution to allow for a rural or Native subsistence priority.
