State doesn't want elk given to tribe

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001

Montana wildlife officials are still protesting a transfer of elk from a private couple to the Crow Tribe.

The Montana Supreme Court is hearing an appeal filed by the couple. They want to give some of their herd to the tribe but the state is blocking it.

Even though the elk will end up on the reservation, where state environmental laws don't apply, the state believes it has the right to stop the transfer for fear livestock may be harmed.
