Bush seeking own global warming pact

White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card said on Sunday that the Bush administration is seeking to propose an alternative to the Kyoto Protocol global warming agreement the President rejected earlier this year.

The alternatives would probably be discussed at a meeting with international leaders this fall. A Cabinet-level task force is working on the issue, said Card.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week unanimously passed a non-binding resolution urging Bush to offer an alternative to the treaty or propose a new one.

Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) on Friday called on power plants and various industries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases thought to contribute to global warming. The Kyoto Protocol contained provisions for the United States to reduce the emissions, but the Bush administration rejected it because there were no requirements place on developing nations.
