Wash. tribe wants to take over dams

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001 The Yakama Nation of Washington has teamed up with a European-owned company to seek control of two dams on the Columbia River. The tribe and PacifiCorp want to operate the Priest Rapid and Wanapum dams, whose licenses are currently held by Grant County Public Utility District. The licenses expire in 2006 and the tribe will submit a competing application in 2003. The dams are located on land ceded by the tribe in 1855. The tribe has a treaty-protected right to have a role in the management of fish and wildlife in the ceded area. Get the Story:
