Congress to be asked for $1.2B

SEPTEMBER 31, 2000 The Departments of Interior and Agriculture will ask Congress for an extra $1.2B to cleanup damage from the worst fire season in 50 years and to prevent future fires, according to a report obtained by the Associated Press. Agency officials said the request could change by the time it reaches Congress. Currently, the plan calls for $342 million for training, equipment and supplies; $300 million for fighting fires; $200 million for a firefighting emergencies fun; and $115 million for clearing debris, stabilizing soils, and cleaning up watersheds damaged by fires.
