SEPTEMBER 22, 2000

At the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians conference in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, tribal leaders passed a resolution calling for the breaching of four dams on the Snake River.

The Clinton adminstration said a decision on the dams is several years down the road, if at all. Although many tribal leaders and environmental groups have called for breaching, they are opposed by several members of Congress, including Senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash).

The annual conference of 55 tribes passed other resolutions, including one calling for the US Army Corps of Engineers to turn over the remains of Kennewick Man to five tribes in the Northwest. They also called for $200 million in federal funding for diabetes prevention and treatment.
