Pueblo threatens lawsuit over road

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 Sandia Pueblo Governor Stuart Paisano said the New Mexico tribe would consider filing a lawsuit should the city of Albuquerque move forward with plans to extend a road through the Petroglyph National Monument. The Pueblo opposes the extension because of cultural and religious sites located within the monument. Environmental groups also oppose the extension and Mayor Jim Baca has kept it from happening. That may change, however, since a number of candidates to run the city support the extension. President Bill Clinton in 1998 signed a bill authorizing the road through about 1,200 feet of the monument. Get the Story:
