Northern Cheyenne discuss coal
SEPTEMBER 27, 2000

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana held a fair to inform tribal members and others about the possibility of mining coal bed methane, a natural gas.

Some tribal members were opposed to drilling, wondering how it would affect the environment. Others said they don't have enough information about a non-binding vote on the issue scheduled for next month.

The tribe said mining the gas will create new jobs. Representatives from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Land Management appeared on panels along with the Environmental Protection Agency, Geological Survey, and Fish and Wildlife.

There is currently a moratorium on new mining wells in the state.
