FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2001

After consulting with the Environmental Protection Agency and Greenpeace, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has decided not to accept a barge of burnt trash now floating off the coast of Haiti.

The tribe had been asked by a company called Waste Management Inc. to take the 3,000 tons of ash that has been floating at sea since 1986. But the tribe said it would not fit in with its environmental policies.
