SEPTEMBER 5, 2000

The US Forest Service will reopen some 20 million acres of land in Montana to hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities, now that the threat of fires has subsided.

The National Interagency Fire Center reports that 27 large fires are still burning in the state. The state was declared a federal disaster area by President Clinton last week.

A fire on the Crow reservation was also contained last week.
