SEPTEMBER 6, 2000

An estimated 4,500 to 5,000 Native American firefighters have been battling blazes throughout the West, representing about 20 percent of the total force, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Indian firefighters attribute their interest and success in the field to traditional knowledge. They are also drawn to the profession due to the salary one can draw from it.

The hourly wage starts at $10.60 or higher for firefighters and can be up to $13.30 for crew bosses.
