SEPTEMBER 6, 2000

A fire within the Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming was 80 percent contained as of Tuesday, according to local officials.

The fire, which was started by lightning, forced the monument to close over the holiday weekend and came within two miles of Devils Tower. It affects private and Bureau of Land Management land.

Devils Tower is considered sacred to many tribes, who continue to conduct ceremonies there.
