SEPTEMBER 7, 2000

Members of the Omaha and Winnebago tribes of Nebraska are fighting again this summer, comprising the first all-Indian firefighting team from the state.

The 32-member crew, including one women, left for South Dakota to fight a fire at Custer State Park and will move onto a fire at Sheridan Lake in the Black Hills. The crew first trained at the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota last week.

The Black Hills fire, the largest in more than a century, is about 85 percent contained. Suspected of being caused by arson, it has burned about 82,600 acres.

The Nebraska team includes 19 from the Omaha tribe and 11 from the Winnebago.
