FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2001

The Bush administration is being urged by Democrat lawmakers and environmentalists to keep a bad on road building and logging on nearly 60 million acres of federal forest land.

The Clinton administration finalized the plan in January after two years of work. Complaints by Republicans and Western governors led the Bush administration to delay it.

The administration subsequently decided to take more comments on how to amend the plan on a local basis. At the same time, a federal judge stopped the Department of Agriculture from mplementing the plan due to challenges in Idaho.
