Democrats hold own ANWR conference

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2001

Apparently tired of Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) hogging the Senate Swamp, Democrats held their own press conference on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday.

The Democrats trotted out labor unions to support their anti-drilling stance. But wait, aren't labor unions like the Teamsters supporting oil and gas development?

Yes, but not all. In addition to the Service Employees International Union, the United Auto Workers, Communications Workers of America, the National Writers Union and the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America have opposed drilling.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) has not brought an energy bill to the floor for debate. Republicans like Murkowski are trying to get some form of ANWR drilling passed, just as the House did.
