Alaska Native leaders on Wednesday voiced their support for continued co-management of natural resources with the federal government.

By working alongside Alaska Natives, federal scientists have gained unique insights into marine life, they said. To further the cooperation, the leaders said the Marine Mammal Protection Act needs to be strengthened and more funding should be available for Native research projects.

The remarks came at the start of the 40th annual meeting of the Marine Mammal Commission being held this week in Anchorage. The commissoin was created by the mammal act.
