An old Indian fort in southern New Mexico is being evaluated by the National Park Service for possible consideration as a state and national monument.

Fort Bayard was used to defend settlers during the Indian wars in the mid-1800s, when the United States was at war with numerous Apache and other tribes in the Southwest.
