After being cleared by a federal judge in Washington, the U.S. Forest Service, part of the Department of Agriculture, on Thursday announced the completion of a land exchange that includes traditional Muckleshoot territory.

The Muckleshoot Tribe and various environmental groups had opposed the exchange of land between the government and a timber company. The Weyerhaeuser Co. has will give about 30,000 acres to the government and receive 4,300 acres.

In response to litigation, however, the company will sell 700 acres back to the government for about $6 million. This parcel of land includes the Divide Trail, which was used by Muckleshoot ancestors.

The tribe had been part of litigation and worked out a settlement.
