Nev. kitty litter permit denied

A Nevada county planning commission voted early this morning to deny a permit to a kitty litter operation that is opposed by environmental groups and local tribes.

Members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony protested before and during the meeting, which attracted upwards of 250 people. Supported by local planners, members believes the mine will have negative impacts on their health.

Oil-Dri Corp. of Chicago, Illinois, said it would appeal the decision. The company wants to open a 24-hour, 7-day mine on land next to the Reno-Sparks Reservation and says it has a valid right under an 1872 mining law Secretary of Interior Gale Norton wants to reform.
