WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2001 Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, today will be releasing his own 400-page energy bill that doesn't include drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Bingaman said the bill encourage development in Indian Country. He also said the bill tries to move the country away from dependence on traditional fossil fuels such as oil and gas and towards rewnewable, alternative energy sources. The bill is a rival to one introduced by the energy committe's ranking member, Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska.). Like a House bill that cleared this summer, Murkowski's package includes oil and gas drilling in ANWR. An attempt to tack on Murkowski's package to a larger bill failed on Monday when he and other Republicans decided to vote against it. Majority Leader Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) is expected to introduce Bingaman's bill today, with debate set for next February. Get the Story:
