The Department of Interior on Monday released an environmental assessment approving an exploratory drilling project in the Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida.

Collier Resources Co. will be allowed to detonate thousands of underground explosives to search for oil throughout the preserve. The National Park Service, however, has issued stipulations on the project.

The preserve was established in 1974 but mineral rights were preserved. The company believes there are 25 million barrels of oil in the preserve.
