Alaska lawmakers are considering whether to support an amendment to the state's constitution to recognize Alaska Native and rural subsistence.

A task force created by Gov. Tony Knowles (D) has offered language to do that. The Legislature is set to act on it.

But one Republican, Assembly Chairman Dick Traini, says he wants residents of Anchorage to have more of a say. He introduced an ordinance asking whether the Legislature or voters should decide on approving the amendment.

The amendment is the state's attempt to conform with federal law and court decisions which recognized Native priority to resources.
