Norton wants water restored to non-Indians

TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2002

The Department of Interior has advanced a plan to restore water to non-Indian farmers in the Klamath Basin.

The Bureau of Reclamation is proposing to give the farmers their full allocation. Protection of threatened fish sacred to the Klamath Tribes and upholding their treaty rights is not a consideration.

The farmers had been denied water last year to protect the fish. They responded with protests and physical confrontations.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Interior, and the National Marine Fisheries Service, part of the Department of Commerce, would have to sign off on the plan.
