Nev. still hates Yucca Mountain

A Nevada state legislative panel on Tuesday voted to oppose the designation of Yucca Mountain as a national nuclear waste dump.

The Committee on High-Level Radioactive Waste voted 7-1 to oppose the recommendation of the site. State Sen. Lawrence Jacobsen, a Republican from Minden, cast the dissent.

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said earlier this month he would make the formal recommendation on the site to President Bush. Congress could override the president's approval once Gov. Kelly Guinn (R) objects.
