Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham on Thursday officially transmitted his recommendation on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump to President Bush.

Abraham had made known his decision last month, to great opposition from the state of Nevada, whose governor plans to veto the site recommendation once Bush accepts it. Congress would have to act to resolve the dispute.

In addition to Nevada politicians and officials, area tribes oppose the site, which would store up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste from sites throughout the country.
