Corps apologizes to Pueblo

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2002 The Army Corps of Engineers has formally apologized to Cochiti Pueblo of New Mexico for destroying sacred sites and harming the tribe's culture. The apology stems from the creation of Cochiti Dam, a man-made structure which flooded tradition sites and ruined farming land. A reconciliation ceremony was held at a recreation area at the dam last December. The tribe and the Corps have been working on several issues together. The tribe has asked to regain control over the Al Black Recreation Area, a popular fishing area, because it is a culturally significant site. The Corps is studying the request and will conduct an environmental assessment. Get the Story:
