Salmon species debate continues

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2002 In response to a federal judge's ruling, the Bush administration will be reviewing the endangered and threatened status of two dozen species of salmon and steelhead. U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan last fall ruled that federal wildlife officials wrongly treated wild salmon and hatchery-raised salmon differently when listing the species as threatened. A property-rights group which has fought tribes on a number of cases brought the lawsuit. The same group, Pacific Legal Foundation, is launching a second lawsuit affecting fish in the Klamath Basin.
