Both sides in the fight over a proposed nuclear storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada have enlisted some heavy hitters.

On the anti-side, Nevadans have former White House chiefs of staff, John D. Podesta, who worked in the Clinton administration, and Kenneth M. Duberstein, from the Reagan administration. Their job is to lobby members of Congress to reject President Bush's site designation although prospects are dim in the House.

On the pro-side, the industry and cities nationwide hired John Sununu, chief of staff for the elder President Bush, and Geraldine Ferraro, a former Democratic vice-presidential candidate. Their job is to convince states and local governments that their nuclear waste should go to Nevada.

But does it all matter, questions The New York Times. While Nevadans and Utahns, where a fight over a tribal storage facility has brewed for years, consider waste storage a top issue, the paper says polls show other Americans know little about the issue.
