Klamath land transfer raises fears

MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2002

The prospect of transferring thousands of acres of federal forest land to the Klamath Tribes of Oregon has some non-Indians worried.

Since tribal members can already fish and hunt on the 690,000 acres of land without state oversight, they fear more loss of wildlife. They also say tribal timber cutting policies could strip the forest.

Tribal leaders and members say they can manage the land as well as anyone else. Prior to 1954, the Klamath, Modoc and Yahooskin tribes were doing just that when the federal government terminated them.

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton said she would consider a land transfer as a means of resolving water management and other issues in the volatile region.
