MONDAY, APRIL 29, 2002

Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico temporarily closed a highway on its reservation to all traffic.

The tribe closed N.M. 53 and state route 61 on Saturday evening to protest a planned strip mine near a lake the tribe considers sacred. After a ceremony was held, the road was opened on Sunday.

A decision on a federal permit for the mine is pending at the Department of Interior. The state has approved the coal mine, which is about 12 miles from Zuni Salt Lake.
