Quebec admits knowledge of poisoning Cree

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2001 Environment Minister Andre Boisclair of Quebec on Thursady admitted the Oujé-Bougoumou Cree First Nation is being poisoned by mining and that the provincial government knew so as early as 1999. Boisclair said Environment Department studies show that Cree lakes were suffering from high levels of pollution. But until the Cree hired their own researchers, the government wouldn't admit to high levels of cyanide, arsenic, mercury, and other heavy metals. Despite the poisoning, Boisclair has only told the Cree to cut down on eating fish from the lakes. Get the Story:
