Candidates for the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Canada's largest aboriginal organization, presented their vision for the position last night to a crowded room filled with leaders throughout the country.

Incumbent Phil Fontaine emphasized the status quo. "In this election you have a clear choice: maintain the momentum or start over again," Fontaine said.

Matthew Coon Come said the AFN needs to be less an outlet for government policies and more a voice for Native people.

Marilyn Buffalo said the money being offered by the government to fulfill treaty obligations is not enough.

Also running is Lawrence Martin.

Voting begins today. 633 First Nations leaders are eligible to vote and 462 had registered as of yesterday.
