JULY 7, 2000

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is opposing a lawsuit filed by First Nations signatories to Treaty 8 and wants to intervene, saying a decision in favor of aboriginals would create a race-based tax system.

The Athabasca Tribal Corporation and the Northwest Territories Treaty 8 Tribal Council have filed suit in Federal Court, claiming a right to tax-exemption per Treaty 8. Their lawyer said the Court should not allow the federation to intervene, citing rules which prohibit interveners from raising new issues.
