Mi'kmaq done with government

AUGUST 15, 2000

The Mi'kmaq Burnt Church First Nation in New Brunswick will not enter into any talks with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, saying the government has been deceitful.

The DFO, however, said they will continue trying to negotiate an agreement with the Mi'kmaq. The Mi'kmaq want to regulate their own fishery and passed a plan earlier this summer to do so, but the government has been confiscating lobster traps and has been engaged in confrontations with fishermen.
