SEPTEMBER 5, 2000

Records obtained from the Indian Affairs Department by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show that the deficit of First Nations rose from $132 million in 1992-1993 to $302 million for 1998-99.

The records only represent First Nations whose deficit is equal to or greater than eight per cent of total annual revenues. They numbered 171 last year, up from 155 in 1993.

First Nations aren't required to open their books to the public but must be accountable fo Indian Affairs for federal funding. Last month, the Department said 346 had not filed satisfactory audits.
